Sierre Leone's Fashion Moguls
43 min
Available until 15/05/2026
In the neighbourhoods around Freetown's landmark, the 300-year-old Cotton Tree, a vibrant fashion scene has been growing for some time, in which women develop new styles and trends from traditional Sierra Leonean fabrics. For the past two and a half years, Mary Ann Kaikai has been teaching women Gara tie dye, the process of making batik fabrics, as part of a training programme. For single mother Isatu Conteh, who had to drop out of school because of her pregnancy, Gara is a passport to a self-determined and independent life.
