In 1609, Henry IV, King of France, sent the Inquisition to the French Basque country to stamp out witchcraft. During the ensuing trials, 80 people were sentenced to death at the stake. From the 15th to the 17th centuries, a total of between 40,000 and 60,000 people, mostly women, were victim of persecution across Europe. Why did this happen?
