Taiwan has almost everything it takes to be an independent state, with a flag, currency, and an army. But it no longer has representation in the UN, and China claims it as one of its regions. Just a few months before the Taiwanese presidential elections in January 2024, ARTE dedicates a special issue to the island. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has raised fears that China could be tempted to emulate Russia and try to take the island back by force.
