It all started in 2017. Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel launched the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project, which was soon joined by Spain. On paper, it's one of the most ambitious European air defence projects. But disagreements are increasing between the partners. They are struggling to align on the sixth generation fighter jet, which is planned to be released by 2040.
