The European Union began in 1952 as the European Coal and Steel Community and has continued to expand ever since, particularly with the eastward enlargement in 2004. Since the war in Ukraine, the centre of the EU seems to be shifting eastwards as countries in central and eastern Europe become more influential players within the EU.
