In Egypt, Mahraganat is controversial. Coming out of Cairo’s densely populated working-class districts, the genre mixes traditional Egyptian Shaabi with techno and hip-hop. The authorities don’t like it but many young people love this raw music which expresses their frustration with the regime and is the soundtrack to riotous street parties.
