An Exceptional Species

The scale of our world tests the capacity of the human brain, which struggles to understand the vastness of the universe.

The probability of life existing nowhere else but on Earth is slim.

In the history of the earth, the age of man is no more than a brief moment in time.

The age of man is short. Mankind is just one of many among the millions of species that populate the Earth's history, just a small leaf on the gigantic tree of life.

Human beings are perhaps not the dominant species they think they are. Many other species are more numerous, larger, live longer, are more powerful or resilient.

At the interspecies Olympic Games, human beings would lose out in almost every category to other species.

You might think that human beings are unique for their superior brain power. And yet, we are by no means the only species with intelligence.

Although dominant on Earth, human beings remain dependent, for its continued existence, on the interconnected web of life of all species.  

A multitude of microorganisms live in and on our bodies. Not only does our health depend on them, but without them we wouldn't even exist.

Human beings created art, science, philosophy and religion. But they have also exploited the world and each other and could make their planet uninhabitable.
